Join other alums and the Central Park Conservancy and Marie Warsh. class of 1997 (Historian for the Central Park Conservancy) for a free event on Juneteenth to celebrate Seneca Village, the predominately African American community that existed before Central Park. Marie will greet the group to provide a brief introduction to Seneca Village and our group will be free to enjoy it! The event, which includes various performances inspired by the history and community of Seneca Village through mediums of dance, poetry, music, storytelling, art activities, and more, organized around Welcome, Education, Community, Empowerment, Enfranchisement, Refection and Commemoration.

Afterward, those interested can lunch together informally at a convenient spot on the Upper West Side.

Friends and family members are welcome!

Thseneca-village-with-captione largely forgotten settlement included over 225 residents at its peak, as well as three churches, one school, and the largest percentage of Black property owners in New York City at the time. Of the 100 black New Yorkers eligible to vote in 1845 – a right linked to property ownership – 10 lived in Seneca Village.

Information about where we will gather to meet Marie at 10 am the morning of the event will be provided to registered participants one day before the event, no later than 1 pm.
