Understanding the Trans Community

At Smith, Ryan Rasdall ’11 was openly gay, identified as female, and majored in The Study of Women and Gender (SWAG). Now, Ryan is a corporate attorney in Boston, identifies as a bisexual transgender man, and uses his free time to advocate for transgender people. Join us for a free, virtual in-depth discussion of transgender issues, personal and political, and the societal and legal consequences the transgender community faces, at large.

In a one-hour presentation with subsequent Q/A Ryan will address transgenderism within its historical contexts, and most pressingly, the real-life impacts of transphobia in areas of education, employment, healthcare, etc., leaving us with thoughts on what we might do, as advocates and supporters, to support the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. 

About Ryan Rasdall

Ryan Rasdall, Smith College Class of 2011, is a Corporate Associate at Goulston & Storrs in Boston, MA. Before becoming a lawyer, Ryan worked as a Legal Assistant for the Transgender Rights Project at Lambda Legal’s Headquarters in New York City. Prior to that, he was a Patient Navigator at Harlem United Community AIDS Center where he provided direct services to LGBTQ youth and adults. 

Ryan also sits on the Board of Directors of the National Trans Bar Association and the Jim Collins Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides funding for transgender individuals seeking gender surgeries. Ryan is also a member of the American Heath Lawyers Association and MA LGBT Bar Association.
