Ring Out the Old, Ring in the New - A Virtual Celebration!

This Virtual end-of-year Holiday Party is for US ALL. Kick back, come with a cocktail (or mocktail) and join us for a rousing and poignant evening marked by music, art history, a touch of drama- fun! Let's celebrate together as 2021 concludes, hoping for better tomorrows as we anticipate the new year.
An all-female band of great musicians Diane Garisto with 2 other singer songwriters will anchor the evening, traversing multiple stylistic genres - rock/pop/blues/jazz. Check out their bios and credits, below.
Reprising last year's heralded presentation, Joan Dilakian, '74, will bring to life the famed MMOA Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Creche in a presentation based on her Highlights Tours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where she is a Volunteer Tour Guide. Also a SCCNYC Board Director, Joan says she is “...thrilled at the overlap between Smith and the Met – volunteers, curators, donors, and more!"

Do you know the literary origin of 'Ring out the Old, Ring in the New'? Come and find out! Gale Eaton '69, award-winning author and Ph.D. (UNC/Chapel Hill, 1990) Gale is professor emerita and former director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island, will expound with a dramatic reading of Tennyson's 'Ring Out, Wild Bells' (only 8 quatrains) and some directed, pithy remarks - as only Gale can do!

About Diane Garisto, Janie Barnett and Elise Morris
DIANE GARISTO began her performing career at the age of ten, singing "Yabba-dabba-do in a Flintstone's Vitamins commercial. From that auspicious beginning, she's forged a career that has taken her into the studio and around the world, recording with such industry notables as Billy Joel, Carly Simon, George Benson, Laurie Anderson Peter Allen, and Al Jarreau. She toured extensively with Steely Dan and Laura Nyro, her childhood idol. Diane had the good fortune to sing on Paul Simon's multi-platinum, Grammy Record of the Year, Graceland, and has worked with such award-winning producers as Nile Rodgers and Malcolm McLaren. In a richly varied career Diane has lent her voice to innumerable television commercials, appeared on The Today Show and Late Night with David Letterman, recorded the soundtrack of Earth Girls are Easy, and other films, and shared the mic with a long list of artists from Patti LaBelle to the Moody Blues. Diane was a featured vocalist at the Edinburgh Music Festival in 2016 and headlined at the Celtic Connections Festival in 2018 alongside Shawn Colvin. She is currently lead vocalist of Stoned Soul Picnic: The Laura Nyro Project.
Virginia native JANIE BARNETT cut her teeth on bluegrass festivals, church coffeehouses and the American Folklife Festival. When she met iconic Americana barnstormer and Newgrass pioneer John Hartford at Folklife, so began her love affair with the alternative roots movement. The seeds were planted for a lifelong quest for a hybrid style that favors the roots music instrumentation, the whimsical story-telling of Steinbeck, and the social passions of one who grew up in the backyard of Washington D.C. Barnett rose in the freelance world, making a name for herself as a smart, precise, and professional chameleon musician, singing on countless film, tv and commercial projects, as well as singing backup for iconic stars such as Linda Ronstadt, Celine Dion, and Rickie Lee Jones. Appearances on SNL and The Today Show, membership in an elite session musician supergroup - these were the bookings of the time. "You See This River," Janie Barnett & BlueRoom's 2017 release, was the culmination of Barnett's years of exploration and living a life that many of us find ourselves living. In addition to working on a second BlueRoom album of original songs, Janie is arranging and recording an album of songs from the Cole Porter catalogue, laced with instrumentation from her Americana sound. In between her artist life of writing, recording and performance, Janie travels from her home base of Brooklyn to Boston to mentor emerging singer-songwriters at Berklee College of Music.
As a professional studio and stage musician, ELISE MORRIS' credits cover a wide range of experiences. She was the featured keyboardist/vocalist with Joe Jackson on the international Heaven and Hell tour; she headlined The Water Festival in Sweden as a core member of the fusion band GeWaDoKa; she was music director in concert for Ronnie Spector, and she was featured vocalist and master of the prepared piano, playing the highly improvisational score of Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) for the play America Dreaming at the Vineyard Theatre in New York City. She has played and/or sung with Cy Coleman, Rebecca Pidgeon, and Peter, Paul and Mary among others, and has performed with many artists of the vibrant NYC music scene over the years, including music directing the current Stoned Soul Picnic project featuring the music of Laura Nyro. With the release of her album "Dancin' With the Boys," listeners were introduced to her inventive songs that blend influences of jazz, pop, theatrical, world, experimental and folk. Elise calls her unique style "jazzbo" because it captures stylistic borders. n 2019, her song "Mardi Gras" reached #1 on US iTunes Jazz charts and #3 on the Billboard Jazz Digital Sales Charts; "Unto Light Unbroken," #37 on US singer/songwriter charts (#7 in Canada), and "Silently," a featured summer release in Jazziz Magazine. And 2021 is ready to see the release of Elise's new album, LOVEISALOVE, a world album in multiple languages, recorded in Mali, the Ivory Coast and New York, featuring the talents of Alou Sam, Michèle Kaniba Traoré and Sory Ibrahima Diakité
