THE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT
A Conversation With
Ruth J. Simmons
Ninth President of Smith College
Please join us for an exceptional evening in support of the SCC NYC Scholarship Fund.
Tuesday, April 2, 2024 - 6:00 to 8:30 pm
The Yale Club of New York City
50 Vanderbilt Avenue on the corner of 44th Street
All proceeds benefit the Scholarship Fund dedicated to providing critical financial aid
to students from the Greater New York area.
Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, former President of Smith College, will be our honoree and featured speaker. She is currently a Distinguished Presidential Fellow at Rice University and Adviser to the President of Harvard University on HBCU Initiatives.
After serving as Smith's president from 1995 to 2001, Dr. Simmons became the first Black president of an Ivy League institution, leading Brown University from 2001 to 2012. Following a brief retirement, she served as president of a historically Black university, Prairie View A&M, from 2017 to 2023. While at Smith, she launched a number of important academic initiatives, including an engineering program, the first at an American women's college.
Dr. Simmons is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. She has received more than forty honorary degrees from universities around the world, including Oxford University, Ewha Womans University in South Korea, and the American College in Greece. Among her many honors, Dr. Simmons recently delivered the National Endowment for the Humanities Jefferson Lecture, "Facing History to Find a Better Future," at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. This is the highest honor the federal government bestows for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities.
We hope you will join us for a conversation with Smith College President Emerita Ruth J. Simmons and Smith College Trustee and Smith Medalist, Deborah Archer, BA Smith 1993, JD Yale 1996.
