The Smith College Club of NYC invites you to connect with your fellow Smithies as Carolyn Kuan ’99 conducts the 2024 version of An American Soldier, a compelling and tragic opera making its debut at the Perelman Performing Arts Center this May
Based on the powerful true story of Chinese-American Army Pvt. Danny Chen’s story and the ensuing courts-martial of Chen’s fellow soldiers, this New York City premiere opera tells the powerful true story of a young soldier from Manhattan’s Chinatown who sought to serve his country, only to find his biggest threat was the very people who swore to protect him. Composed by Huang Ruo with a libretto by David Henry Huang, this opera promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Recognized as a conductor of extraordinary versatility, Carolyn Kuan has enjoyed successful associations with top tier orchestras, opera companies, ballet companies, and festivals worldwide. Her commitment to contemporary music has defined her approach to programming and established her as an international resource for new music and world premieres. Carolyn has been the Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra since 2011.
