Ever curious about drawing? How to make something look 3D using charcoal? Learn basic ideas and tricks to render 3D objects on paper in a virtual classroom with artist, educator, designer Lisa Jacobson, '97, Chair, Visual Arts, Collegiate School, NYC.

This is a great way to look more closely at objects around you and connect what you see with your eyes and your brain. You'll start with the basics and learn how to make  everyday objects appear to have volume on the page.

And, if there is interest, following this event, Lisa will follow on with other sessions, #2 and #3, to complete her Introduction to Drawing Trilogy. Hang out (virtually) with other Smithies while challenging yourself to see more carefully!

ALL-YOU-WILL-NEED DRAWING SUPPLIES:  These supplies are not costly and available at any local art or office supply store, including Staples, DickBlick, and, of course, Amazon.

- Drawing Paper: this can come in a pad or large book that can lie flat or in single sheets. It does not need to be expensive but it needs to be more substantial (heavy) than copy paper;

- A Range of Pencils: Pencils come in different hardnesses which determine how dark and light they can mark Here's one example:

- Eraser: It can be a drawing eraser but any eraser should work.

- A Light Source: One that you can control as much as possible - a desk lamp or flashlight would be great.

- And last: A WHITE OBJECT (or two) of your choice: an egg, plastic silverware, a paper cup, a ping-pong ball or baseball. (Note: Objects with more complex shapes are great, too, but more challenging, e.g., a Chinese food cntainer, dinnerware, toothbrush, crumpled white paper (hard!))
