Ladies Mile Walking Tour with Emma Guest-Consales

Sunday, October 27th | 2:00 - 4:00 PM ET

What: Join Emma Guest-Consales ‘90 for a tour of the Ladies’ Mile Historic District, a retail center from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century.  Fifth Avenue between 14th and 23rd Streets was known as Ladies’ Mile, while Sixth Avenue was nicknamed Fashion Row. By the end of the 19th century, grand department stores were designed specifically to attract middle-class and well-to-do women to shop, relax, and meet friends without male interference.

The buildings of the Ladies’ Mile district include some of the most important examples of lavish cast-iron architecture in New York City. Great dry goods emporia such as B. Altman’s, Siegel-Cooper, Hugh O’Neill, and Lord & Taylor, were shopping meccas designed to attract customers from all walks of life. These buildings still stand, and while the goods displayed are more prosaic, the grand architecture still elevates our experience today.
