Join fellow Smithies for an after-hours private tour at Poster House of Puerto Rico in Print: The Posters of Lorenzo Homar led by Es’pranza Humphrey, Assistant Curator of Collections.

 

Lorenzo Homar was a pioneering printmaker, poster designer, calligrapher, painter, illustrator, caricaturist, and costume and theatrical set designer. Active from the 1950s through the 1990s, few equal his impact and influence as a teacher of poster design and printmaking in Latin America.

 

This exhibition focuses on his poster output over a thirty-year period during which time his work reflected the complex history of Puerto Rico, encompassing elements of Taíno, Spanish, and African cultures as well as the rising tensions between tradition and modernity under the Luis Muñoz Marín government. His influence is so extensive that today he is known as the father of the Puerto Rican poster. 

 

Lorenzo Homar fue pionero del grabado, el diseño de carteles, la caligrafía, la pintura, la ilustración, la caricatura, el vestuario y la escenografía teatral. Activo entre las décadas de 1950 y 1990, pocas personas han igualado su impacto e influencia como maestro del diseño de carteles y las artes gráficas en América Latina.


Esta exposición está articulada en torno a la producción de carteles a lo largo de treinta años de su carrera, en los que su obra refleja la compleja historia de Puerto Rico, con elementos que abarcan desde las culturas taína, española y africana, hasta las crecientes tensiones entre la tradición y la modernidad bajo el gobierno de Luis Muñoz Marín. Su influencia es tan amplia que hoy en día se le conoce como el padre del cartel puertorriqueño.
