Dudamel Conducts Stravinsky, Glass & Soper
Thursday, May 22, 2025 | 7:30 PM ET
Join the Smith College Club of New York City for a musical night as composer and soprano Kate Soper, Iva Dee Hiatt Professor of Music, Smith College and the 2024 New York Philharmonic’s Kravis Emerging Composer, takes the stage and premiers Orpheus Orchestra Opus Onus, her new work commissioned by the NY Philharmonic. The orchestra will be led by the NY Philharmonic’s future Music and Artistic Director, Gustavo Dudamel. In addition to Kate’s new piece, the program will feature Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements and Philip Glass’s Symphony No.11.
Composer, performer, and writer Kate Soper has been creating unique and uncategorizable musico-theatrical spectacles for more than a decade. Her large-scale works include the monodramas Voices from the Killing Jar (2012) and IPSA DIXIT (2017) and the operas and librettos for Here Be Sirens (2014), The Romance of the Rose (2021), and The Hunt (2023). A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Soper has received awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim and Koussevitzky Foundations, American Academy of Arts and Letters, and American Academy in Rome. Soper is a co-director of and performer with Wet Ink, a new-music ensemble dedicated to adventurous music-making across aesthetic boundaries. Soper is an Associate Professor of Music at Smith College.
