Liberation on Broadway

Join the Smith College Club of New York City to see Liberation on Broadway, the critically acclaimed new play by Tony Award nominee Bess Wohl and directed by Tony Award nominee Whitney White, in a strictly limited Broadway engagement at the beautifully renovated James Earl Jones Theatre.

Liberation received its Off-Broadway premiere earlier this year at Roundabout Theatre Company, where it earned ecstatic reviews and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and received 6 Lucille Lortel Award Nominations.

In 1970s Ohio, Lizzie gathers a small group of women to talk. But talking quickly becomes a necessary and bracingly funny attempt to change their own lives and the world. Fifty years later, her daughter is shocked to find herself asking the same questions her mother did and goes on a search through the past for answers.

This is a timeless story that speaks across generations about the power of women to spark lasting change.

In the playwright’s own words…
What if you could meet your own mother as a young woman and ask her about the choices she made? Would she have regrets? Would she do it all again in exactly the same way? This question, this time-traveling leap of imagination—made possible by the magic of theater—is at the heart of my play, ‘Liberation.’

Growing up the daughter of a “second wave” feminist, I found myself in constant conversation with my mother’s path, even as I charted my own. Most urgently, I wondered whether the world she and her cohorts fought for—one in which all humans were treated equally—would ever arrive. It is in this spirit, with this hope and aspiration, that I made my play. Leaning into the complexities, the difficulties, the humor, and the pain of what it takes to change the world, the play invites us to remember that people coming together can do great things.

As Gloria Steinem reminded us, when she came to see the play and we thanked her for her life of activism, “It was fun.”

Thanks to Jodi Kaplan ’89, who is involved with the play and who brought this to our attention!
