The Smith College Club of New York has organized a day-long trip to the mother ship!

Featured is the Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA), where Composing Color: Paintings by Alma Thomas from the Smithsonian American Art Museum is on view from July 24, 2026, through January 10, 2027.

In collaboration with SCMA, Smith Dining Services, and the Alumnae Association, we have planned an exciting day including a buffet lunch in Alumnae House and remarks by SCMA staff. There will be plenty of time to visit the exhibition, explore other parts of the museum and, of course, visit your favorite spots on campus.

Composing Color features works from the world’s largest public collection of Alma Thomas’s paintings and offers an intimate view of her evolving practice during her most productive years, from 1959 to 1978. Organized around three themes that preoccupied her—Space, Earth and Music—the exhibition invites visitors to experience the world as Thomas did: through luminous fields of color that evoke sound, motion, temperature and even scent.

The Smithsonian traveling exhibition is enhanced at SCMA with two additional works by Thomas: Morning in the Bowl of Night (1973), which the museum bought in 2018, and Untitled (1966), a watercolor on loan from Sylvia Lewis ’74 and Byron Lewis, Sr., which has been promised to SCMA.
