Next Week's Membership Party, Upcoming Events - and Stay Tuned for Mountain Day

Dear Reader,

We hope to see some new faces - and many old friends - on Tuesday, September 29, at our Annual Membership Party, held at the beautiful Bridget Moore ('79) Gallery in Chelsea. This is an ideal opportunity to hear what the Club has planned for the coming year and also how you can get involved - with interviewing prospective Smithies, sharing ideas for events and more. All are invited, but since admission is free for members, it's a good time to join now or renew your membership.

These are just a few of the exciting, upcoming events that we have planned:

  • An evening with Dr. Anne Moore '65, Medical Director of the Weill Cornell Breast Center and one of New York Magazine's Best Doctors, who speaks about her work and research with breast cancer on Wednesday, October 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  • The world premiere performance of "The Inn at Lake Devine," a new play based on the book by novelist and former Smith professor Elinor Lipman, adapted by and starring Jake Lipman '00 (no relation), to be held on Wednesday, October 14; there will be a special talk back with both Elinor and Jake Lipman following the show.
  • An afternoon of dialogue and reflections in honor of Otelia Cromwell, the first African-American graduate of Smith in 1900. Taking place on Sunday, October 18, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, the discussion will be led by Professor Paula Giddings, Africana Studies E.A. Woodson 1922 Professor, and Professor Riché Barnes, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies.

And remember, we are listening for the Mountain Day bells from Northampton! We will meet in Bryant Park that afternoon. Watch your email and our Smith Club Twitter and Facebook channels for an alert when Mountain Day is announced.

Our new year of activities may just be starting, but one program is a longstanding fundraising tradition: selling Pecans. Dorothy Guth '50 initiated pecan sales more than 25 years ago, noting their popularity at Smith Clubs around the country. And she got the attention of an important voice - Craig Claibourne, who was then food editor at The New York Times. He wrote an article about the efforts called "9 Tons of Pecans for a Cause."
