Next 2 Weeks: Breast Cancer Expert, World Premiere with Exclusive Talk Back, Otelia Cromwell Tribute

Dear Reader,

The next two weeks feature a range of events, from the educational to the entertaining. Join us for one, or all three!

As we acknowledge October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, join us this Wednesday evening, October 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm for an informative, important talk by Dr. Anne Moore '65. As Medical Director of the Weill Cornell Breast Center and one of New York Magazine's Best Doctors, Dr. Moore is on the front lines fighting this disease, which ranks as one of the most common cancers impacting women in the U.S. Dr. Moore will discuss some of the latest advancements in treating breast cancer, the importance of screenings and early detection and what women of all ages need to know.

Then on Wednesday, October 14, at 7:15 pm, we flash back to Spring 1964 for the world premiere performance of "The Inn at Lake Devine," a new play based on the book by novelist and former Smith professor Elinor Lipman, adapted by and starring Jake Lipman '00 (no relation). The story begins when 14-year-old Natalie Marx's mother inquires about a summer resort in Vermont, only to be told that the "guests who feel most comfortable here are Gentiles." For Natalie, this triggers what the New York Times called "a minefield of identity politics." This "witty romantic comedy" covers a range of topics, including "Anti-Semitism, intermarriage, ethnic cuisine and Anne Frank."

Following the performance, Elinor and Jake Lipman participate in an exclusive talk back to share more about the inspiration for the book and its journey to the New York stage. Proceeds after ticket cost will go to the Smith Scholarship Fund. For a preview of Elinor Lipman's writing, see Sunday's New York Times
Modern Love column.

Close out the week on Sunday, October 18, at 3:00 pm with an afternoon dedicated to Dialogue and Reflections on Otelia Cromwell (Class of 1900). The discussion will be led by Professor Paula Giddings, Africana Studies E.A. Woodson 1922 Professor, and Professor Riche Barnes, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies.

We are now collecting orders for Pecans - a longstanding fundraising tradition for the Club. Not only are they delicious, but pecans make excellent gifts and net proceeds go to a great cause, the Smith Scholarship Fund. Click
