White House-Honored Mental Health Advocate, French Meet-Up, Pres. McCartney & Maya Lin

Dear Reader,

The work of Dior Vargas '09 has been recognized by the Women's Media Center, #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us and Project UROK, among others. She was recently honored by President Obama and the White House as a "Champion of Change" for "doing extraordinary things to empower and inspire" through her activism on behalf of Americans with disabilities. She is committed to breaking down the stigma associated with people of color and mental illness. Her new photography project on the topic features men and women holding signs describing how they are living with mental illness and serves as a resource for those struggling with this important issue. Dior shares her passion in a talk on Intersection of Race and Mental Illness this Tuesday, January 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm (Midtown location provided to registered attendees).

If you want to brush up on your French or just want to spend an afternoon meeting area Smithies, check out our first French-speaking Meet-Up of the Year at Le Pain Quotidian (931 Broadway between 21st & 22nd streets) on Saturday, January 30 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. This members-only event lets you practice your skills in a casual environment. Food and beverages are available for purchase.

Start your February - and your next job search - on the right foot on Saturday, February 6, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the next Smith Business Network event. This interactive day on

Provost and Dean of the Faculty Katherine Rowe will talk on Reimagining Neilson: A Library for the 21st Century with renowned architectural designer Maya Lin about her vision in redesigning Neilson and how this exciting plan is addressing the changing needs of scholars and students at Smith.
