LES Meet Up; Documentary on Culture, Gender, Food & Power; Open Board Meeting; Paris JYA's 90th

Dear Reader,

Spend your Saturday getting to know your neighbors at the
Lower East Side Neighborhood Meet Up. Stop by Spiegel (26 First Avenue between 1st and 2nd streets) starting at 1:30 pm to meet new Smithies, have a bite, and hear more about the Smith Club of NYC. This event is for members only, so now is an ideal time to join the Club.

On Thursday, February 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, join
Dr. Sarah K. Khan '87, as she screens and discusses her new documentary, Bowing to No One. The film relays the story of Satyavati, an indigenous female farmer from Central India. After the screening, Sarah will speak about her research on culture, food, gender, climate and power with Sylvia Lewis '74, CEO and Founder of the Narrative Network. This work is the result of Sarah's recent Senior Research Scholar Fullbright-Nehru Fellowship in India. The event takes place on the Upper West Side (location provided to those who register) and refreshments will be served. Cost is $20 for Members and $30 for Non-Members.

Close out the month on Monday, February 29, at 6:30 pm, at our
Book Group. Tonight's selection will be Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. For more details, email Bookclub@smithclubnyc.org.

Kick off March by coming to the NYC Smith College Club Open Board Meeting. Held on Tuesday, March 8, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm, this is a great way to hear about the Club's work. Have you been thinking about joining a committee? Or do you want to help recruit new students? Come to this session to get your questions answered and find out more.

On Wednesday, March 9, it's time for our next Salon, hosted by Dr. Patricia Tidwell '73. We will discuss women's transformative economic influence, based on the book, Fast Forward: How Women Can Achieve Power and Purpose, by Ambassador Melanie Verveer and Kim Azzarelli. We will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the home of an alumna near Union Square.

Finally, save the date of Saturday, March 19, for a Brunch commemorating the 90th Anniversary of Smith's Junior Year Abroad Program in Paris. Join us to connect and celebrate this wonderful anniversary at a fun Midtown East French bistro - where speaking French is encouraged (but not required). Space is limited and the event starts at 1:00 pm; register now to hold a spot.
