Tales from a Front-Line Clinician, Annual Faculty Lecture and May Neighborhood Meet-Up

Dear Reader,

On Monday, May 2, at 6:30 to 8:30 pm, join us for a lecture by Wendy Bassett, LCSW, AC '98, MSW '03. She will speak on Tales from a Front-Line Clinician, de-mystifying and de-stigmatizing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans' mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During this special evening, which is co-sponsored by The Smith College School for Social Work, Bassett shares her insider perspective as a clinical social worker helping returning war veterans, specifically addressing the ways veterans' concerns about stigma and negative beliefs about mental health care may actually hinder them from accessing care. Bassett, who is now a trauma therapist in private practice in Manhattan, served for more than a decade with VA Connecticut Healthcare System providing outpatient psychotherapy to veterans with PTSD.

On Wednesday, May 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, it's time for our Annual Faculty Lecture. This event, which is free for members ($30 for non-members), features Sara Pruss, Associate Professor of Geosciences and Recipient of the 2015 Kathleen Compton Sherrerd '54 and John J. F. Sherrerd Prize for Distinguished Teaching. Pruss, who has been a member of the Smith faculty since 2007, specializes in invertebrate paleontology, marine science and the history of life on earth. She has been featured in two National Geographic TV programs and has been involved in field research projects in northern Namibia, Death Valley and Newfoundland. Colleagues praise Pruss for encouraging students in the classroom to think like scientists.

Can't get back to Northampton for graduation? Celebrate Ivy Day (Saturday, May 14) by meeting up with Smithies in Brooklyn at our Neighborhood Meet-Up in Williamsburg. Meet the group at Smorgasburg (East River State Park at North 7th Street) starting at 1:30pm; look for the balloons and sign. This is a casual gathering for members and those who are interested in hearing about the Smith Club in a relaxed, social setting.
