COVID-19: An Immunology Boot Camp to Understand Your Immune System

Thursday, April 29, 7 PM to 8:30 PM (ET)

covid-for-calabrese

Pathogens or infections have presented a perpetual challenge to man in tandem with evolution. While over the past two centuries (especially, the past 100 years) we have made great advances in decreasing our vulnerability to infections, we still can and do die from a wide variety of organisms. It has been postulated that in virtually all instances when we succumb to an infection, an inadequacy or deficiency in our immune system is combined with some evolutionary trick the organism has acquired during its own evolution, designed to evade our sophisticated defenses.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused all of us to ask increasingly sophisticated questions about our own what immune systems such as what is immunity, what is resistance, what do antibodies do versus T cells, what factors govern re-infection, what does viral escape mean and how does this relate to vaccine therapies, among many, many more.

Dr. Leonard Calabrese, Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, will walk through the natural history of COVID-19 and use it as a learning tool to understand the wonders and complexity of the immune system and finally what you can do to strengthen your own.
