Rediscovering Native American Illustrator and Designer Angel de Cora, Smith College Class 1896
Thursday, October 21 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM (ET)
Meet Yvonne Tiger, (Smith '03) scholar, curator and art historian in-person at a pre-lecture reception for Smith alums (hors d'oeuvres and cash bar) and talk, honoring the 150th birth anniversary and 125th anniversary of the graduation from Smith College of Angel de Cora, influential artist and illustrator, designer and teacher, and the first native American to graduate from Smith College (1896). The event will be hosted by the Society of Illustrators at their upper Eastside Manhattan gallery.
COVID PRECAUTIONS: This is an in-person event. All participants must show proof of vaccination in accordance with NYC requirements (people 12 years of age and older are required to show proof they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized for emergency use by the FDA or WHO) and wear a mask when not eating or drinking. To ensure safe social distancing the pre-lecture reception is limited to 40 participants and the lecture, to 70 persons. Do you have a passion for encouraging young women to thrive and reach their potential through a Smith College education? The Smith College Club of NYC is seeking volun
teers to conduct alumnae interviews with NYC high school students who have applied, or are considering applying to Smith. The interviews (30-60 minutes)can be conducted virtually, or in-person if both parties are comfortable. If you are interested and would like to learn more please click here.

Bending Wide: Reflections on My Leadership Journey After Smith. Special guest speaker, Phoebe Haddon ’72, Chancellor Emerita and Professor of Law at Rutgers University-Camden will share 
her story and the many challenges she has faced along life’s pathway. Phoebe is the recipient of the 2019 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of American Law Schools and the 2019 Smith College Medal. She served as vice chair of the Smith College Board of Trustees until 2009 and currently serves on the Boards of Trustees for the Cooper University Health System, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and HERS, an organization dedicated to cultivating and mentoring women in higher education.
One of Phoebe’s most recent and personally meaningful recognitions was to be asked to serve at Metropolitan State University as the Rachel B. Noel Professor. This rotating professorship honors the work of her aunt who was instrumental in leading Denver’s School Board in its school desegregation effort.
